I consult to companies engaged in the development and use of next generation battery materials, and more broadly on the topic of innovation. I'm particularly interested in how companies allocate their resources when taking on high-risk, high reward research.I received a PhD in chemistry in 1998, and have worked as a consultant since 2008. At different times I have worn the hats of inventor, technology manager, CTO, and CEO. I have developed technology in fields including energy storage, carbon capture, displays, semiconductors, and medical devices, and am author or co-author on 94 issued US patents. I work directly with technologists to analyze data, plan experiments, and ideate solutions. And I work with investors, CFOs, and CEOs to build detailed models of the financial impact that this new-to-the-world technology makes, to choose which elements of development to prioritize, and benchmark their proposed products against competition.I also offer IP and expert witness services to the legal community, and testify in high stakes litigation. You can find my expert page at sethadrianmiller.com.You may see me write occasionally on the future of energy, transportation, and land use on LinkedIn, Medium, and in my blog homepage at perspicacity.xyz.

PresidentHeron Scientific, Inc. Nov 2008 - PresentI consult though Heron Scientific, Inc. mostly in battery technology and markets, for companies leveraging new materials to create a new type of value proposition. This has included to consulting to companies engaged in improving lithium ion, sodium ion, flow battery, and solid state battery chemistries.I help my clients analyze the cost, performance, and competitiveness of their technologies; align their development roadmap to markets and capital; anticipate where alternative solutions will come from and how the competitive landscape will evolve; develop IP strategies; and tell complex technology stories. I have a PhD in chemistry so I understand the technical details (and still love them!). My unique contribution is often putting technology into the appropriate context to analyze or communicate it to non-technical managers, finance professionals, attorneys, or venture investors.I also provide expert services to the legal community. I have been retained nineteen times as an expert, and have testified six times in matters including battery technology, and in chemicals and materials science more broadly. I am comfortable with high stakes litigation, having served as the primary technical expert on a patent case that was resolved as part of a >$1B settlement. I have provided opinions in cases involving patent infringement, trade secret theft, misrepresentations to shareholders, and others. You can see my expert witness resume at sethadrianmiller.com. -
