Analysis of waste water from refinery units as well as monitoring the effluent treatment plant. Analysis is conducted by ion chromatography, IR spectroscopy, colorimetric methods and microscopy. These methods allow for robust and timely analysis to allow for smooth running of the ETP and to conform to an environmental permit

As reliability chemist I worked closely with the lab manger to ensure that all work conducted in the lab was accredited to ISO17025. I have responsibility for setting up new equipment and quality control of this equipment; this would include risk assessment and production of the COSSH assessment for new equipment as well as establish the test method before use by the technicians in the lab. My main role is to ensure that all machines are maintained to high levels of calibration and maintenance so a technician could use the equipment with all confidence to produce accurate results. I have a good knowledge of oil lab based testing and have knowledge of methods used by IP CN and ASTM in addition to this I have represented Murco on a number of sub committees at the energy institute. I also took part in round robin exercises to monitor the performance of my equipment and this along with frequent calibration allowed me to monitor the performance of the lab equipment .

Duties included: Effluent analysis and undertaking biomonitoring for the waste leaving the refinery using a range of methods including ISE electrodes, titrations and Hach Lange products.Low level sulphur and nitrogen testing using WDXRF and TS-100. Metal analysis by ICP–OES and AAS. Low level halogen analysis by AQFOctane testing by CFR engine and Cetane testing by IQTGas and liquid chromatography and a number of other methods used in the testing of petroleum products.

My role in the petroleum based lab is to work with the tech 1 to ensure the quality of the product produced by the refinery. The product (diesel, gasoline, kerosene, liquid propane gas) is analysed at the process stage and again before the finished product leaves the refinery. To test the quality of the product various methods are used including liquid and gas chromatography and testing for additives such as lubricity are completed and results compared against a specification provided by the customer.
