About Sanjay Seth

Sanjay Seth is Chief of Staff & Senior Advisor for Climate and Equity for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 1, a 590-person office of EPA focused on New England. In this role, he supports the Regional Administrator to craft and implement policy, planning, operations, and personnel strategies across all programs, with a focus on climate change, environmental justice, and regional implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act programs. Additionally, Sanjay serves as a Lecturer at Harvard, where he teaches on climate change, urban planning, and public policy. Previously, he managed the City of Boston’s Climate Ready Boston program, which focuses on implementing a multi-billion dollar climate resilience plan to help prepare Boston for the impacts of climate change. Prior to Boston, Sanjay worked on an interdisciplinary consultant team on behalf of the City of New York to help plan for a multi-billion dollar investment to protect New York from the impacts of climate change. While at Harvard, he founded the Climate Leaders Program, a year-long interdisciplinary program for students with a professional interest in climate action. He was also co-founder and co-president of Harvard Alumni for Climate and the Environment, a 3,000-member nonprofit affiliated with the Harvard Alumni Association.Previously, Sanjay has served as a fellow of New Urban Progress, a program focused on improving transatlantic relations among metropolitan regions and developing more sustainable and just cities. He served on a teaching team at the Harvard Kennedy School for a hands-on course focused on building effective, values-driven organizing campaigns. He served as a Fellow of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, developing tailored management, leadership, and decision-making programs for mayors and their senior staff. And he has served as a Research Analyst at Regional Plan Association, focusing on climate adaptation, climate mitigation, and international forums for sharing best practices among global cities and regions. Originally from Bismarck, North Dakota, Sanjay has a background in community and political organizing. He has a Bachelor's in Economics, Politics, and Public Policy from Goldsmiths' College, University of London, a Master's in Urban Planning (MUP) from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and a Master's in Public Administration (MPA) from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Served on the Climate Ready Boston team at the Environment Department, where he led neighborhood climate resilience planning, managed the Climate Ready Boston program in collaboration with a wide range of partners, and engaged in other plans, projects, and partnerships that address the impacts of climate change and protect the health and well-being of all residents and communities in Boston. (www.boston.gov/departments/environment)As part of the Climate Ready Boston team's work in the Environment Department over the past two years, the City of Boston released our citywide heat resiliency plan with particular focus on environmental justice neighborhoods; kicked off a new $2.5 million Climate Ready Streets program focused on improving air quality, heat resilience, and stormwater management along public transportation routes supporting disadvantaged communities; developed and supported more than $70 million in various Federal and State grant proposals for climate resilience investments with the majority of funds focused on disadvantaged communities; launched new State and Federal partnerships, including work with the Army Corps of Engineers, to advance the work of Climate Ready Boston to implementation as we completed our final neighborhood climate resilience plan; distributed direct aid to overburdened and disadvantaged residents to better protect them from heat waves; launched a Cool Roof grant program highlighting equitable heat resilience solutions for environmental justice neighborhoods; and will complete the City's final neighborhood coastal resilience solutions plan for East Boston and Charlestown, among other projects. Additionally, the team has grown from two full-time staff to four full-time staff and three full-time fellows - and is expecting to hire up to two additional full-time staff over the coming year.
