Received a grant for a self-designed research project studying the gene expression of the bacteria Bifidobacteria longum to analyze the genetic expression levels of Bifidobacterium longum as it digests gliadin, the protein digest of gluten responsible for the inflammatory autoimmune response associated with Celiac Disease. Was also awarded the Chapman Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (OURCA) scholarly/creative grant to fund this project.

Uci Mind Institute

Interned in a brain repository that provides samples to various labs and projects exploring the molecular and cell neuropathology of Alzheimer’s disease. These projects included using Amyloid-Beta production in patient fibroblasts with specific risk alleles to create a model for disease progression, CRISPR alteration of the APOE genotype in fibroblasts, and direct cellular reprogramming of fibroblasts into astrocytes. Also received introductory training for human stem cell culture.

Went out into the field to observe and record the behavior of Loons (Gavia immer). Also collected data for an individual project that sought to explain the variation of tameness between different loons. Continuing to prepare a manuscript for publication with the findings of this research.
