Since 2017, I have had the privilege of leading the team at NNRG, a think-learn-and-do tank of ecological forestry. We advance the state of knowledge about ecological forestry, spread the word about its benefits and feasibility, and help landowners put it into practice on their own forests. During that time, our field forestry staff has grown from 2 to 5 FTE, our outreach and communication staff has increased from 1.8 to 2.4 FTE, and our annual budget has increased from $500,000 to $900,000. We've established three demonstration forests in King, Pierce, and Jefferson counties, where we can showcase the results of ecological forestry. We've developed a program in Climate Adaptation, pilot-testing techniques to help forests become more resilient in the face of a changing climate, and sharing resources about those techniques with forest owners. And we have modeled and documented the ways growing older forests can store more carbon in the forest and in wood products, while also increasing timber harvest. Most recently, we have completed a book published in spring 2024 by Mountaineers Books. I directed a program to partner with private landowners and public agencies to achieve goals of ecological restoration. Areas of focus included riparian ecosystem restoration, timber harvest policy, fire hazard reduction, invasive species control, and native grassland restoration. I supervised 7 year-round employees who oversaw a few dozen seasonal field staff, and raised our program's $600,000 annual budget from foundations, public agencies, and private parties.After I moved to Providence, RI in late 2011, I wrapped up projects I'd been leading personally:- the adoption of a permit for light-touch, selective logging in the Mattole watershed, and - a study of the potential for carbon offset projects in our area.

Spearheaded efforts to develop revenue streams to support daily on-line news digest of the Cascadia bioregion. Oversaw editorial operations, raised philanthropic support, and negotiated sale of the operation to a Seattle NGO. Publication continues as the Sightline Daily, www.sightline.org/news/ .

I help organizations and coalitions use consensus process to forge agreements and make robust plans to move forward. Most recently, I led the board and staff of Burn Design Lab through a strategic planning process in 2016, as it was formalizing its split from the for-profit Burn Manufacturing Corporation. Previous clients have included the California Watershed Coalition, Smartwood (project of the Rainforest Alliance), the Trees Foundation, and the Headwaters Forest Coalition. I have also given workshops to train boards in the effective and efficient use of consensus process.

My work focused on forestry, salmon, and energy issues, as well as the more philosophical questions of how people relate to the rest of the natural world. My articles appeared in Orion, The Nation, Newsweek, Sierra, Whole Earth, Organic Style, and the Christian Science Monitor, among others. My work also appeared in book form in Saving Our Ancient Forests (Living Planet Press, 1991) and A Green City Program for San Francisco Bay Area Cities and Towns (Planet Drum, 1986, with Peter Berg and Beryl Magilavy).
