About Seung Chan Lim (Slim)

I envision a world, where every visionary Founder can become the CEO they need to become in order to lead their company to win the game of their choice, without feeling drained, burdened, or lonely.I meet many compassionate Tech Founders who are...● Not sure how to align, motivate, and develop their organization around a bold vision & strategy.● Tired of interpersonal challenges with co-founders, key employees, investors, or the board.● Looking for a way to make decisions they will not regret.● Struggling to focus on important long-term priorities because of the time and energy required to attend to urgent tasks.I’ve been there.1️⃣ 9 years in a deep tech startup, working 1-on-1 with the Founder to solve organizational alignment. 2️⃣ 4 years researching the psychological and interpersonal challenges commonly faced by visionary innovators—using myself as test subject for firsthand insight.3️⃣ 12 years exclusively coaching tech startup CEOs, helping them make decisions they will not regret, keeping them accountable to not lose focus on long-term goals, and not burning out. What I’ve learned from 25 years of experience is that the surprising key to all those challenges lies in realizing empathy.❌ Notice I did not say “having” empathy.❌ Nor did I say “practicing” empathy.✅ I said _realizing_ empathy.📣 We _realize_ empathy if we suddenly empathize with someone (including ourselves) or something, through an unexpected _realization_: one that often makes us go “Ah ha!” “Oh...” or “Ha ha ha!” concerning something we either did not or had incorrectly assumed to have understood or appreciated enough.Realizing empathy is not about...🙅🏻‍♂️ Being kind and agreeable🙅🏻‍♂️ Trying to help and soothe🙅🏻‍♂️ Sacrificing one's self for othersWhen we realize empathy...🙆🏻‍♂️ We’re moved to _see_ something we could not or did not see before, because the realization _shifts_ our perspective. If you can realize empathy with yourself and others, you will be able to...✅ Align and motivate your organization around a clear vision & strategy—no more resistance.✅ Navigate interpersonal challenges with ease, leaving behind the stress of strained relationships and draining interactions.✅ Make decisions they will not regret.✅ Go from merely firefighting to prioritizing long-term strategic growth and sustainability.Want to learn more?Go here: https://coaching.realizingempathy.com/

Once a startup enters high-growth stage and the employee headcount reaches 100 or comes close to it, it becomes difficult for founders to match the rate of their growth as CEO with the rate of their startup's growth. It is at this point the founder is challenged to enter a phase of adaptation and maturation, where they can significantly increase the scalability and effectiveness of their ability to lead and align their team as CEO.My role is to provide the support and guidance a Founder-CEO needs from this point on until they pass on their CEO title, such that they can effectively align, lead, and scale their organization to the next level of growth without sacrificing their health & relationships, becoming mired in interpersonal challenges, or feeling drained by people management.Through invitation from Techstars, Google, and Singularity University, I have coached some of the world’s most high-caliber Founders over the past 12 years on their transition to becoming high-performing CEOs that build, lead, and scale healthy & high-performing organizations.Over the past 25 years, I have guided the growth & innovation process at organizations of various scales ranging from ultra large organizations like the US Department of Defense to large organizations like General Electric and Eaton, all the way to hundreds of small startups.

Slim spent the first 9 years of his career developing expertise in the objective process & methodologies of high-tech product & service innovation. He then conducted a 4-year-long ethnographic research into the subjective experience of innovation by temporarily becoming a fine artist.Reflecting on his bouts with mental health & interpersonal challenges during this time, his preliminary research results revealed that:1. When innovators experience too much tension, the pain & discomfort of such tension can lead us to adopt a problem-solving mindset.2. The problem-solving mindset often comes with a blind spot, which can keep us stuck or lead us to make decisions that make our situation worse.Slim also discovered that if innovators can receive the kind of support that helps them realize empathy with themselves and others, they can experience a release in their tension along with a shift in perspective that can reveal to them:1. The “real” problemor2. A more accurate comprehension and appreciation of the problem.Once they have a sufficiently accurate comprehension and appreciation of the “real” problem, they often have little trouble breaking through their challenge. For the past decade, Slim has been applying his research to to help Founder-CEOs gain:1. The wisdom & clarity required to make progress in challenging situations2. The requisite confidence, energy, and room in their mind to navigate the uncertain and complex terrain of innovation.3. The know-how to lead or manage their innovation process in alignment with who they are or who they can become, which requires less stress, force, and energy to lead and make decisions, thus promoting better health.I am also the author of the book Realizing Empathy, which has won a number of awards including the National Indie Excellence® Book Awards: New Non-Fiction for content and the Communication Arts Typography Annual Award of Excellence for design.

In 2012, I toured the world with my award-winning book “Realizing Empathy” to share my ethnographic research findings on how surprising realizations of empathy can lead to not only better decision making for those leading the process of innovation, but also significant improvements in their mental & interpersonal performance overall.Part of the surprising findings is that the good intentions embodied by compassionate leaders and their zeal to problem solve often _prevent_ them from seeing and understanding themselves or their key stakeholders with clarity. I have witnessed time and time again how such blindspots and lack of insight can lead to:1. The decline in the leader's own health, 2. The leader getting in the way of their own desired impact, 3. A failure to foster alignment and cooperation among key stakeholders, and, in serious cases, 4. The unintended promotion of employee resentment and turnover as well as a decline in relationship quality with their spouse and children. In fact, I was such a leader, myself.I now envision a world, where the compassion embodied by leaders can have the impact they intend. A world where leaders have access to the support they need for the impact they intend. A world where they're appreciated and rewarded for the effort they put in to align their intention with their impact. A world where their day-to-day no longer has to feel synonymous with self-sacrifice.

While working as a consultant, it became clear to me that design consulting had a blind spot. The blind spot was that we were merely designing something risky and creative, not actually implementing it ourselves to see it all the way through to market introduction. To fulfill this gap, I worked with a local community of college dancers to not only design risky and creative performances, but also implement it ourselves to see it all the way through to audience introduction. You think leading highly opinionated professionals is difficult? Try leading highly opinionated college students. ;)
