About Seán Cunningham, Ph.D.
I am a lecturer at TUS Midwest, teaching in the Product Design Control, Mechanical Engineering, and Precision Engineering programmes. I have previously taught engineering design at the University of Galway and the University of Limerick. I am actively engaged in the development and implementation of engineering education frameworks, particularly the CDIO initiative.I am a professional educator and researcher with a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Limerick. I have over ten years of experience in medical technology R&D, spanning multiple industrial innovation partnerships in the west and midwest of Ireland. My research focuses on the design, development, and commercialization of new product development (NPD) in MedTech. I have specific expertise in simulating medical devices using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), and electro-mechanical (EM) simulation, as per ASME V&V 40-2018 guidelines.I was awarded my PhD in August 2020 for research on modeling and developing aerosol drug delivery devices to effectively treat systemic illnesses via the pulmonary system. The primary aim of this research was to enable less invasive, targeted drug delivery.I hold a BEng in Biomedical Engineering and am a subject matter expert in quality management systems (QMS) including ISO 13485:2016 and FDA 21 CFR 820.20-40, as well as product risk management (ISO 14971:2019), MDR 2017/745, and IVDR 2017/746. Additionally, I have expertise in IEC 60601, DFSS, and HFUE. I also hold professional qualifications and affiliations in project management from the Institute of Project Management (IPM) and the International Project Management Association (IPMA).
