I work on modelling and predicting space weather events and my research is being used by our operational space weather forecasters. Space weather could have a detrimental impact on everyday life and our worldwide economy which is estimated to cost us billions of pounds after disaster has struck. A large part of my activities involves assimilating data to validate our space weather models. One of our goal at the Met Office is to be at the forefront of better forecasts of the solar wind speed, onset of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from our Sun. Space weather is a branch of space physics with a strong link to the Earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere. The Met Office is a world leader in the research of operational space weather forecasts. In the not too distant future you may find our space weather forecasts very useful on your weekend trip to the moon.

My main area of research is the atmosphere and the human induced pertubations to the climate. I am an expert in global chemistry transport modeling, inverse modeling and interpreting satellite observations of chemical trace gases in the atmosphere to study various aspects of the climate. I have been working on global emissions from wild fires and its impact on atmospheric composition as seen from space. I am interested in the distribution and transport of wild fire emissions. In my current role, I work as a model scientist for a large consortium funded project to estimate emissions of carbon dioxide and methane over the UK and global scale. I also work as a consultant for the European Space Agency, where I am part of the Climate Change Initiative GHG-CCI.

I worked there with Dr. Saulo Freitas and his team on a model inter comparison between our chemistry transport model (GEOS-Chem) and their regional CATT-BRAMS (Coupled Aerosol and Tracer Transport model to the Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modelling System). This research led to a better understanding of the model transport errors of carbon dioxide, and the associated errors over the Amazon basin region. This region is tremendously important for untangling the still many unknows in the description of the global carbon cycle.
