As a chemist in the department of Chemical Development, I planned and executed organic syntheses required in support of Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) projects. Projects included exploration of alternative synthetic methods of pipeline compounds, logical changes to synthetic routes, purification of reaction intermediates for structure determination, gram-scale synthesis of known drug production impurity markers, complete analysis of known drug production impurity markers, studying effects of impurity spikes on subsequent synthetic steps, and polymorph interconversion on gram and multi-kilogram scales.

I was responsible for all aspects of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) analysis for Avanti Polar Lipids. This included in-process structure verification, stability sample purity analysis, degradation studies with subsequent purity analysis, product quality control, raw material verification, unknown impurity structure elucidation, and outside testing of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. These tasks required regular solvent preparation, sample preparation, controls preparation and verification, and maintenance of the cryomagnet including fills of cryogenic fluids. Responsibilities also included Method Development and Method Validation pertaining to NMR analysis and the creation of written reports for outside testing results and in-house NMR analyses. I also created new standard operating procedures (SOP) relative to novel quantitative proton-NMR techniques that I developed.

Development of Novel Blockers of the Voltage-gated Sodium Channel: A Chemotherapeutic Route Targeting Breast and Prostate Cancers. Designed and synthesized several compounds predicted to have low millimolar or nanomolar IC50 values in cancer cell lines present in patients with prostate or breast cancer. These predicted values came from a comprehensive 3D-QSAR (CoMFA) model designed by Charles Zha.This work required familiarity with structure analysis tools including NMR, IR, and Mass Spec. All weekly progress was presented at group meeting in a cogent written report. Additional graduate student duties included teaching laboratory sessions and guiding recitations. This required a comprehensive knowledge of all material covered in those sessions.
