About Shaan Cory

While working on my PhD in Building Science, I performed energy audits on over 50 buildings using BMS data to determine if existing commercial buildings could be retrofit to achieve Net Zero Energy. As a Building Scientist at Beca, I knew many of our customers were wasting 20-30% of their energy because their building’s HVAC systems were not optimised. Through my research, I discovered that by analysing BMS data to quickly identify and implement HVAC energy savings measures, we could deliver 10-30% savings. This led to the founding of BTune in 2016. Backed by Beca, BTune is an advanced technology service that helps buildings optimise their HVAC systems via their Building Management Systems to reduce energy use, running costs, and carbon emissions, with no capital expenditure or major infrastructure changes. Typical savings are realised within a matter of months and the technology is suitable for any building with an open protocol BMS. Reducing energy demand and consumption through services like BTune is the first step towards achieving Net Zero energy. So far, we’ve helped our portfolio of customers reduce their energy expenses and carbon emissions by an average of 20%, all by operating and controlling their buildings more efficiently. If you’re a building manager, building owner, or sustainability manager looking to reduce your energy expenses, improve performance, and work towards Net Zero, get in touch to learn more about how BTune can help you reduce your energy expenses and carbon footprint.

Marking the student's reports on the studies above. BBSC 231/SARC 223 Helping and teaching students to use thermal, visual and acoustical measuring equipment, computer programs, how to write formal informative reports and marking the students work. BBSC 331/BUILD 231 Helping and teaching students to use thermal computer simulation programs to imitate a real buildings envelope as a filter to the exterior environment, how to write formal informative reports and marking the students work.
  • Victoria University Of Wellington
    Phd Candidate
Victoria University Of Wellington Mar 2010 - Mar 2015
Researched the feasibility of refurbishing the New Zealand Non-residential building stock to be Net Zero Energy Buildings."My research demonstrated that net zero energy can be achieved by retrofitting the commercial building stock to consume less energy, and additional Greenhouse Gas free energy generation is not required. ""If we retrofit 1,200 of New Zealand’s largest commercial buildings (sized over 3,500m2) to net zero energy, the savings would be equal to the annual electricity generated by all wind turbines in New Zealand."
  • Victoria University Of Wellington
Teaching Fellow For Bild423 - Buildings And Energy
Victoria University Of Wellington Jun 2013 - Nov 2014
Coordinate and teach the Buildings and Energy course which is run for post graduate Building Science Students. The course assesses the interaction of energy with buildings. The focus is on energy performance and energy management in practice. In particular, students are asked to Energy Audit a medium to large commercial building and then create a Calibrated Energy Model of that building (Calibrated is when simulated energy consumption matches a real buildings energy consumption).
  • Branz
    Research Assistant
    Branz Oct 2008 - Feb 2014
I am a research assistant in the Building Energy End-use Study (BEES), a study on energy consumption in New Zealand non-residential buildings. I am currently assisting in researching and establishing a standard and reliable method for modelling the energy consumption across the entire non-residential building stock.During the summer of 2008/09 I assisted with the literature review research on similar projects around the world and general energy related topics for the BEES report. In May 2009 I began assisting in research for Micheal Donn regarding a representative method for modelling of the entire New Zealand nonresidential building stock.
  • Branz
    Research Assistant Supervisor
    Branz Nov 2010 - Feb 2011
Supervising three research assistants undertaking work on:Modeling and calibrating template models of the New Zealand commercial building stock in EnergyPlus for the Building Energy End-Use Study (BEES)
