Erumely, Sabarimala

The vision of Green Pilgrimage is, pilgrims, the pilgrim cities and places that receive them, becoming models of care for the environment, river water and Public health. Primary objective is to control changing climatic pattern on land and water resources during Sabarimala pilgrimage. The grave issue in Erumely is the use of toxic, unhealthy and deadly chemical colours for Pettathullal the ritualistic custom. Heavy quantity of chemical colours are being used in every pilgrim season in Erumely. The Green pilgrimage program in association with Citizens India Foundation under CSR funding of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited BPCL locally partnered with Manavam society , firstly introduced eco-friendly colour powders produced by Telangana Agricultural university (PJTSAU), as an alternative for chemical colour powders for Petta-thullal. Availability of alternatives for chemical colours helps the authorities to take a strong decision to ban chemical colour powders on the coming years. Needless to stress, the changeover to ecofriendly colours will save health hazards to the pilgrims and the local communities and incalculable water and environmental pollution.

Pilot Challenge Fund prioritised an evidence based, multi action, coordinated grassroots road safety activities. The primary objective of the project was to create a model to replicate road safety practices encouraging local groups at district level.Activities conductedParticipatory road safety appraisal- Conducted Local studies , Road user surveys, Direct observation studies, Transect walk, Local consultations to analyse the life pattern and safety risks .Citizens Network for Road safety- Successfully Identified local individuals, organisations, institutions, departments, media and hospital database, through appropriate consultation and meetings held for developing local road safety plan in every municipality and panchayat . A web-based application software was developed for community database for local networking and community forums.District level road safety stakeholders coordination- Organised a District level stakeholders meeting, Created district level working group, engineering and enforcement suggestive measures were collated and forwarded the report to Kerala road safety authority
