About Shabnam Rouhani, Phd
I have several years of experience in Geographic Information Systems with a history of working as a GIS Technician in MassGIS, a Research Assistant in my PhD program, and a Research Fellow at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.I am interested and skilled in hydrologic modeling and the use of remotely sensed data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for a variety of applications, such as monitoring and predicting land cover, vegetation, streamflow change and surface reflectance and albedo.I have particularly studied the impact of changes in snowmelt timing, since the 1950s, over a number of watersheds across the New England region. I have also implemented the spatially-distributed process-based Regional Hydro-Ecological Simulation System (RHESSys) over the Penobscot Watershed in Maine (the second largest watershed in New England), in order to study the flux of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the Gulf of Maine and investigate the role of future climate change projections and land cover change scenarios on streamflow and DOC flux rate in this large heterogeneous watershed. Most recently, I have been using Arc GIS and image processing tools to apply remotely sensed data to future land cover projections of New England in order to estimate potential changes in surface reflectance and albedo due to predicted changes in land cover type.

Gis Technician
Integrating address data for Next Generation 911 system by using custom built tools to map and verify addresses within the Greater Boston AreaEvaluating and revising current address records, geo referencing site plansCommunication with municipalities to incorporate their updates on addresses to edit MassGIS address records database Using ArcMap to review structure polygons that are missing from the GISDATA version of the structures along with archiving obsolete structure polygons representing buildings that no longer exist or have undergone significant changes within the Greater Boston Area to incorporate to the Master Address Data (MAD)- Statewide Address points for geocoding
Research Fellow
Explored the temporal trends in snowmelt timing in the Penobscot Watershed in State of Maine. - Results showed trend under all the climate change projections (from one week to three weeks), predicting an increase in both temperature and precipitation in futureApplied two different methodologies to partition winter time precipitation (the original RHESSys methodology and the Dingman et al., 2014 methodology) to investigate possible improvements in studying temporal changes in the timing of snowmelt- Applied C and other programming skills to enhance simulation models by including a new methodology for winter precipitation form partitioning- explored the annual and inter annual variability in the amount of fluvial DOC export under future climate change scenarios in the Penobscot Watershed. - Results showed an increase in the annual export of DOC under most projected climate scenarios from %9 to %32 change with the highest increase occurring in winter, as a result of projected increases in both winter temperature and precipitation comparing to 1960-1972 base timeline
Research Assistant
- Applied RHESSys model, I simulated the daily Penobscot Watershed DOC flux in the large forested Penobscot watershed of Maine. - The simulated DOC flux correlates well with the observed values.-Initialized, calibrated, and validated the RHESSys model with both remotely sensed data (NPP and LAI products) and in situ measurements (streamflow and DOC flux) to provide a reasonable platform to explore both ecological and hydrological controls on DOC flux in this large, heterogeneous watershed- Explored vegetation composition change scenarios using RHESSys models in the Penobscot watershed of Maine to study annual streamflow DOC flux Results showed decrease of 5%-6% in the annual streamflow DOC flux under cases where the original forest vegetation composition was changed to conifer dominant forests.
Consultant
- Worked with clients, processed data, studied ecological and hydrological impacts of different projects, and prepared presentations to discuss the results with clients
