During the past two decades, ABKT has grown in its development approaches, thematic areas of intervention, and geographic outreach. From emergency and humanitarian work to disasters risks reduction, ABKT has come up with indigenous approaches in sustainable development for social, economic and political empowerment of marginalised groups and communities in the northwestern parts of Pakistan. ABKT has organised hundreds of community-based organizations in Malakand Division and mobilised them for specific causes to engage with government institutions and other important stakeholders in the region. Shad Begum is planting the seeds for a grassroots women’s movement in the isolated tribal areas of Pakistan where men determine women’s mobility, visibility, and voice. Using group activities and micro-credit to empower women, Shad builds their capacity to become politically active and run for office, thereby gradually supplanting the male-led jirgas—illegal, self-authorized local councils—that govern outside the law.

Under her leadership, ABKT has mobilized scores of community-based organizations to engage with the government and has trained thousands of women in different skills and trades. Ms. Begum previously worked with the UN Human Settlements Program as a consultant for the “Building Gender Ladder Project,” as well as with UNDP’s Women Political Participation Program. She contested local elections in 2001 as an independent candidate and served as councillor for five years in Dir Lower. She is an Ashoka Lifetime Fellow and the recipient of numerous awards, including the U.S. Department of State’s “International Woman of Courage Award” (2012) and the “Prize for Creativity in Rural Life,” awarded by the Women’s World Summit Foundation (2008).
