Chess with Mr. S is an in-school chess program, which focuses on the belief that chess is an incredible game, which when taught correctly can bring with it, a great deal of positive effects in both mental and social development. The primary objective is to introduce the game of chess as a sport of the mind – while teaching social aspects of good sportsmanship and learning from defeat. Chess is a strategic game, and among other things, it promotes critical thinking, problem solving and patience. In addition to teaching this beautiful game, Chess with Mr. S encourages students to become leaders through teaching and helping one another grow. Students who wish to lecture games are given the opportunity to teach a class and develop their public speaking and leadership skills (with the encouragement and guidance of qualified Chess Instructors).
