Dr. Shailendra Kumar Gupta is Professor of Law at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. He has done his Ph.D. on environmental justice in Bhopal Gas Leak Disaster. He is President of a multidisciplinary discussion group - Academiqe ( now Accademiic) at Banaras Hindu University. The Aacademiic has organised more than 360 weekly sessions so far. He did two Refresher Courses in environmental law in the years 1999 and 2000 at National Law School of India University Bengaluru. These courses were part of the prestigious Environmental Law Capacity Building Project funded by the World Bank. Subsequently, he designed the Environment Law Capacity Building Project of the BHU. He played key role in implementation of this prestigious project . Professor Gupta has also worked as the Executive Director of Legal Aid and Service Clinic ( and Clinical Legal Education Program) from 2012 to March 2021. Under his leadership the BHU Legal Aid and Service Clinic has achieved greater heights in providing free legal aid to clients and undertook numerous community legal education and awareness programs. Prof. Gupta filed a Public Interest Litigation in Allahabad High Court wherein he highlighted the problem of inhuman conditions in prisons in State of Uttar Pradesh. The Hon'ble Allahabad High Court has issued number of directions in the interests of prisoners. The case is still pending in the High Court. Prof. Gupta has special interest in public advocacy . He is also Member of the Consumer Advocacy Group, Hyderabad which consists of about one thousand public spirited persons from India and abroad. Professor Gupta has special interest in subjects like jurisprudence, constitutional law, environmental law, public advocacy and legal aid law. He is also working as Anti Discrimination Officer at BHU . He has been active member of many NGOs including Art of Living, Mahamana Malaviya Mission, Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari etc. Prof. Gupta is also discharging his duties as the Vice President of the Mahamana Malaviya Mission, Banaras Hindu University Varanasi Chapter. Prof Gupta has been member of University committee that organizes weekly Gita Lectures on Sundays. Prof. Gupta is founding trusty of the Just Discourses Foundation Trust, New Delhi.
