About Shailesh Kumar, Phd
I am an interdisciplinary socio-legal researcher, criminologist, and ethnographer at Royal Holloway, University of London. I teach and co-convene Criminal Law and Contract Law and supervise LLB dissertations. Since 2019, I have taught at four London universities. My research and teaching intersect criminal law, criminology, public law & policy, legal anthropology, socio-legal theory, and South Asia studies. I finished my PhD as a Commonwealth Scholar funded by the UK government from Birkbeck, University of London. Before joining RHUL, I was a Lecturer at the University of East London. I convened and taught Criminal Law, Criminal Justice Process, Policing and Criminal Investigation, Research Skills, and Race, Ethnicity, Crime and Justice modules, and supervised an LLM dissertation. For two terms, I had a short stint at SOAS as a Teaching Fellow of Criminal Law. I taught several modules at Birkbeck to both UG and PG students: Criminal Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Legal Theory, English Legal Systems and Methods, Contract Law, Law of the European Union, and Social Research Methods.I have published articles in peer-reviewed international journals and chapters in International Handbooks. I sit on the Project39A Criminal Law Blog editorial board. I am a peer reviewer for several international journals and publishers like Routledge & Oxford University Press.After my UG and PG degrees in Law, I earned an MPhil at JNU, as a UGC Junior Research Fellow funded by the Indian govt. My MPhil thesis is an ethnographic study of courts in Delhi. I then briefly taught at the Law Faculty, University of Delhi.I moved to London as a doctoral candidate. My PhD thesis is a qualitative empirical study of stakeholder perceptions and experiences of the operation of the POCSO Act- a special law dealing with cases of child sexual violence in India. I am involved in providing research expertise and support to NGOs/ Governmental organisations working on child sexual violence, youth justice, child education, rights of incarcerated people, and right to information in the UK and India. I actively mentor & support students, particularly first-gen higher-ed learners, for legal research & academia.I love swimming, theatre, playing tennis & volleyball. I watch movies and sports. I enjoy reading non-fiction literature on the history & politics of caste, class, gender, race, religion and abolitionist feminism. I (try to) sing, and learn languages, cuisines, & Piano.
