Pharmacists can make life-saving impacts to patient care, but whether patients get that care is based upon the hospital, day of week, time of day, and available tech. This thought motivated me to pursue a career in pharmacy administration, to build sustainable systems and structures.In my career, I have led several informatics projects including 4 EMR conversions, an automated dispensing cabinet upgrade, and opening a new cancer tower. My key takeaway is the difficult balance between subject-matter experts and generalists. Often individuals specialize in one part of a system, leaving few who understand how the parts work and depend on each other. I strive to be an expert in operations, regulations, and systems so I can serve as a bridge who can help tie the pieces together. I read user guides and seek to understand a system’s full capabilities. Other notable efforts include building highly functional teams, establishing a health system pharmacy administration and leadership residency program and expanding clinical pharmacy services to provide consistent coverage as a 24/7 hospital.My leadership beliefs:
