About Shaina Philpot, Ed.D.
Dr. Shaina Philpot (she/her/hers) is an enrolled tribal member of the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Native American Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, her first Master’s Degree in Public History with a subspecialty of Native American History from the University of California, Riverside, and her second Master’s Degree in Teaching from the University of Southern California. Shaina has also earned her Educational Doctorate (Ed.D.) in Leadership in Higher Education from National University. Her research centers on American Indian students’ sense of belonging in higher education, specifically comparing American Indian students’ sense of belonging between predominantly White institutions (PWIs) and tribal colleges and universities (TCUs). Responsible for the successful fiscal, operational, and compliance administration of the NSSSP grant authorized by California Education Code Section 79520. Serve as the educational Tribal Liaison to tribes and K-12 Indian educational partners. Establish and sustain relationships with current and potential collaborators and community partners. Manage staff and the physical space of the Native American Higher Education Resource Center (NAHER). Develop the elder-in-residence program. Establish and guide campus strategy and practices to ensure an inclusive climate and support a thriving campus community for Native American/Indigenous students.

Serve as a success coach for Morris 1101 students throughout their first year and beyond. Serve as a recovery coach for designated NASS eligible students with academic and other issues as needed. Partner with academic advisors, campus programs, and others to ensure that students access resources for learning and success. Assist students in achieving their goals utilizing intrusive and appreciative advising practices and intervention strategies. Log student contacts, success plans, referrals and follow-up.

Provide data regarding SSS student participant performance to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Provide documentation to support TRIO SSS Department of Education annual performance reporting. Offer various student support services for eligible participants.
