About Dr. Shaina Thomas
Shaina Thomas, a Tulsa, Oklahoma native, is a recent doctoral graduate of Howard University. Thomas holds a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, Master’s in Instructional Leadership & Academic Curriculum, English Education and a Bachelor of Arts in African/African American Studies, Sociology and Social Justice from the University of Oklahoma. She is a valedictorian, Gates Millennium Scholar (GMS) alum and mentor.She has served 10 years in secondary education and experiential learning programs across roles including teaching, instructional coaching, administration and curriculum development. Her areas of research center education equity. She has studied how school, district and community members identify and respond to youth homelessness, including the implementation of federal policies. Thomas has facilitated interactive workshops centering critical literacy, composition, civic engagement and community reconstruction. She supports students in harnessing their creative and intellectual curiosity through speech, written composition, research, civic responsibility and understanding historical contexts and implications of literature and events through project-based experiential learning. She collaborates with a variety of stakeholders to address educational equity issues related to public policy and practices such as access to resources, economic empowerment, housing, gentrification and racial disparities in education and has worked with universities, districts, curriculum development teams, teachers, museums, community-based organizations, advocates, policymakers and foundations. She is a published author of Tulsa’s Legacy (2018), founder of Greenwood & Archer Publishing, LLC named after intersecting streets in the nation’s historic Black Wall Street. She has conducted qualitative studies, supported quantitative studies and co-authored a higher education textbook. She has also produced policy briefs, peer-reviewed manuscripts and public scholarship within a 3-D virtual symposium and newspapers. She has published a master's thesis, doctoral dissertation, op-ed column and a debut historical fiction novel based on the enamored legacy of Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Black Wall Street. She has also completed a Yale University summer session (2024) and a Center for Black Literature 2024 Summer Fellowship to continue her commitment to influencing educational and public policy through captivating and informative narratives (in film and print).
