- Take receipt of samples for all Pathology departments, including prioritisingrequests for urgent work- Sort samples and requests into different Pathology categories, to be ready forcollection by staff from all Pathology disciplines- Check discrepant patient details using the Trust Medway System and MedwayData quality- Log, package and despatch samples for analysis, in other laboratories, bycourier- Participate in the reception, identification, preparation, and separation intosecondary containers, of blood and urine samples prior to analysis, observingdepartmental health & safety policy in relation to handling potentiallyinfectious pathological samples- Use laboratory equipment such as automatic pipettors, balances andcentrifuges accurately and safely, and record refrigerator temperatures.- Use the Pathology computer systems to archive spare blood samples and tocheck samples for any outstanding tests- Ensure that samples arriving by transport are delivered promptly to samplereception, and that empty sample containers are cleaned and made availablefor return to remote locations- Prepare 24 hour urine containers by labelling and adding concentratedhydrochloric acid, observing health & safety procedures for handling acids.- Attend to Trust staff, patients, and other members of the public who deliversamples to reception, or who require containers or advice about aspectsof the service, referring enquiries and complaints to more senior technical orclinical staff as required- Cover, on a rotational basis, the dedicated multidisciplinary telephoneenquiries line, retrieving results from the Pathology computer and completingthe telephoned results log. Provide an initial response to complaints andqueries from patients and doctors and refer to more senior staff whennecessary- Sort and distribute Biochemistry and Haematology patient reports generatedfrom the Pathology computer

- To identify and sort all samples received.- To label and centrifuge samples in preparation for testing.- To identify improperly labelled specimens and to deal with them according to the department’s procedure. To investigate mislabelled or mislaid samples and inform requester as necessary.- To charge patient accounts using Meditech.- To input data regarding patient test requirements accurately into the laboratory computer system according to procedures.- To ensure the prompt dispatch of samples needing to be referred to external laboratories and maintain accurate records of work sent out of the department.- To organise and prioritise own work practices to ensure adequate turnaround times are maintained.- To check discrepancies and alert senior staff in a timely manner.- To answer telephone calls from nursing, medical staff and to take add-on requests from doctors and nursing staff.- To be able to follow laboratory procedures and to use own discretion to prioritise own work.- To assist section supervisor in clerical duties such as, but not limited to, monthly staff rota, form checking.- To check fridge and freezer temperatures and notify senior BMS immediately of any equipment failure or problems.- To undertake routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment such as centrifuges according to laboratory procedures.- To carry out urine and MRSA culture and sensitivity plating- To load and run patient samples on Abbot, Vitros, Sysmex and Stago analysers respectively- To carry out the daily maintenance and top up reagents and supplies on Abbot and Sysmex Analysers- To carry out routine QC tests and calibrations for reagent on Abbot analysers

- Managing patient confidentiality - Dispensing Private, NHS and dental prescriptions - Managing and ordering pharmaceutical stock- Assisting Pharmacists in services provided such as annual flu jabs and consultations with patients - Assisting in monthly follow up with patients who are on new medications
