    I had the chance to take part in a research assistantship of Professor David Green’s journal chapter “Everyday Nationalism” and Immigration in an Aging Society: an Analysis of Immigrant Perception in Japan. The paper is concerned with the relationships between nationalist sentiment, public opinion towards immigration, and population aging in Japan. While the link between nationalism and an anti-immigrant stance is long established, population aging is a relatively new, confounding issue. Using… Show more I had the chance to take part in a research assistantship of Professor David Green’s journal chapter “Everyday Nationalism” and Immigration in an Aging Society: an Analysis of Immigrant Perception in Japan. The paper is concerned with the relationships between nationalist sentiment, public opinion towards immigration, and population aging in Japan. While the link between nationalism and an anti-immigrant stance is long established, population aging is a relatively new, confounding issue. Using data from the 2015 Japan General Social Survey, this paper argues that rapid population aging is having a mitigating effect on negative feelings toward immigration, counteracting some of the nationalist tendencies exhibited in Japanese society.
