About Shams Anwar, Ph.D.
I would like to obtain a position as a researcher and establish a research team at a reputable university or research center where I can apply my skills and knowledge. My expertise in hydrogen fuel cells and interest in lightweight, high-performance materials make me an ideal candidate to develop innovative solutions for decarbonizing the aviation industry. As a leading expert in fuel cells, I specialize in developing lightweight and high-power density stacks suitable for aviation power and propulsion. I understand that the weight of fuel cell stacks is a critical factor for aviation applications, with bipolar plates (BPs) contributing significantly to the overall weight. My research and development efforts involve utilizing novel materials, particularly aluminum, to create cost-effective, high-conductivity BPs for large-volume productions. To overcome the challenges of aluminum BPs, I am pioneering the use of graphene-based coating materials and coating methods. Graphene, known for its exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity, anti-corrosion properties, and lightweight nature, holds immense potential in enhancing the performance and lifespan of aluminum BPs. My research is focused on developing cutting-edge graphene-based coatings that can effectively protect aluminum BPs from corrosion and extend their lifetime, enabling their use in lightweight and high-power density fuel cell stacks for aviation applications. With a keen eye for technological advancements and a passion for sustainability, I am committed to driving innovation in aviation propulsion systems. My work aims to revolutionize the use of hydrogen fuel cell in electric planes, making aviation more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Let's connect to collaborate on creating a greener future for aviation and beyond.

Postdoctoral Researcher
CurrentThe development of hydrogen-fueled proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) for aviation is taking place globally as a zero-emission source of power and propulsion. It is critical in aviation applications to consider the weight of PEMFC stacks. Since bipolar plates make up to 80% of the weight of a stack, lightweight, high-performance bipolar plates are key to developing PEMFC systems for aviation. BPs are made from carbon-based materials (e.g., graphite) and stainless steel. A corrosion-resistant PEMFC is heavy and bulky, while a corrosion-resistant PEMFC is light, requires anti-corrosion coatings to prolong its lifetime, and has a relatively low electrical and thermal conductivity, negatively impacting its performance. The Toyota Mirai 2 is constructed from titanium, which provides reasonable electrical and thermal conductivity but is expensive. On the other hand, aluminum is light and provides excellent conductivity but is susceptible to corrosion. Aluminum BPs will be required for low-cost, large-volume production of PEMFCs in electric planes due to the anticipated growth in PEMFC demand. The challenge is to increase the lifetime of aluminum BPs by coating them with anti-corrosion agents. This project aims to develop graphene-based coating materials and coating methods for aluminum BPs to develop lightweight, high-power densities PEMFC stacks for aviation use.
