I am an astronomy professor who specializes in theoretical and computational astrophysics. I am particularly interested in astronomical systems that are sensitive to radiation hydrodynamical modeling, such as accreting black holes, bursting neutron stars, star-forming regions, and irradiated exoplanets. Along with my collaborators, I have developed numerical methods for radiation transfer and radiation magnetohydrodynamics, contributing to the widely used Athena and Athena++ codes. My research group performs computationally intensive numerical simulations and we currently have large allocations on national level supercomputing centers run by NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Energy to support our research.As a professor at the University of Virginia, I have developed courses ranging from a popular general education class on black holes to graduate level courses on high energy and computational astrophysics. My passion for teaching was recognized with an all university teaching award.
