Since graduating college I have had a lot of different experiences and roles within the ag industry. Immediately upon graduation I moved to CA and worked on a hay farm/vineyard. Growing up in Iowa I had never been exposed to crops outside of corn and soybeans, so this experience was invaluable in seeing different types of farming practices and equipment. I got a job with Crystal Valley Coop as a trainee in the agronomy department, so that my wife and I could be closer to family. I was able to shadow the sales guys on sales calls, help setup test plots, and mentor interns. My favorite part was learning about precision ag and the tools and capabilities that farmers have now to produce more with less. In September 2015, an opportunity to go back home and work as an agronomist opened up at a local Coop. I landed the job and started working at Stateline Coop as an agronomist and helping my dad on the farm. However, due to a poor culture fit and my dad not being quite ready for me to step into farming that role did not work out. I learned a lot from that experience and the importance of culture when evaluating job opportunities. After a short stint in a soybean crush facility, the job of inside sales at Ag Spray Equipment opened up. I began as an inside salesman and helped customers find the right parts and sprayers they needed to get the job done. I also learned about keeping inventory up to date, invoicing, and quality control. After about a year with the company I moved into the Assistant manager position. I am know responsible for overseeing the two employees at the location and keeping in constant communication with my manager to make sure that the location is running smoothly and staying profitable. Through all of my various positions I have learned a great deal about what my strengths are, what I can bring to the table, and the importance that culture plays in healthy and productive work environment.
