About Shane Grant, Ph.D

As a detail-oriented analytical chemist PhD, I have a passion for biotechnological innovation by leveraging advanced analytical technologies. My expertise extends to experimental design & execution, analysis & interpretation, effective team-working, and results communication to niche and general audiences. I strongly desire to contribute my knowledge of bio/analytical chemistry toward advancements in diagnostics/therapeutics in the biotechnology sector, and ultimately toward overall improvement in human health. I completed my PhD journey in 2024, which focused on applying a rapid atomic spectroscopic method to tackle the issue of bio-process variability resulting from raw material variation within the Nanoscale Biophotonics Laboratory (NBL) at University of Galway. Here, I acquired the tools required to be an adept researcher such as advanced instrumentation skills, data analysis proficiency, effective communication, and leadership skills. In my current role, I actively contribute to our team's objective of producing oligonucleotides by developing optimized synthesis and purification processes. We are dedicated to refining and innovating methodologies that enhance efficiency, quality, and reliability of oligonucleotide production using state-of-the-art technologies. Our secondary objectives also include analytical R&D through multidisciplinary collaboration with other teams.

    Antrim, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
As part of the oligonucleotide synthesis team, our primary objective of developing and optimizing oligonucleotide synthesis, purification (UPLC), and QC (LC-MS and UV-Vis) processes. Responsibilities include developing processes for sample, equipment, and data handling/processing. This includes generation of SOPs and work instructions towards establishing routine processes, equipment operation and employee training. Other responsibilities include effective data analysis, interpretation, and communication to other team members, management, and other teams.Other objectives include analytical R&D through multidisciplinary collaboration. This includes small molecule or bio-molecule purification/QC towards advancing biotechnology R&D.

Lot-to-lot variability of biopharmaceutical raw materials can significantly impact bio-process performance including altering the quality, yield, and efficacy of the biologic in-vivo. Raw materials used for biopharmaceutical manufacturing include cell culture media, hydrolysates, inorganic salts, sugars, etc. which can vary in molecular and elemental composition between batches and may be partially responsible for lack of bioreactor reproducibility.A major focus of my PhD work involves novel method development for screening elemental content in biopharmaceutical raw materials (elemental fingerprinting) using a cost-effective atomic spectroscopic technique. By combining atomic spectroscopic data with statistics and visualization methods, this platform may potentially provide more knowledge into how overall elemental content impacts Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs) of the biologic as well as provide insight into sources of raw material variability.
  • University Of Galway
    Graduate Teaching Assistant
University Of Galway Sep 2020 - May 2022
    Galway, County Galway, Ireland
My duties involved mentoring a final year undergraduate student and assisting teaching for groups of 20+ students. I was responsible for educating and managing the safety of students, and guided students in developing good laboratory practice and technical writing skills. My major goals was to aid students in developing an analytical mindset for approaching scientific problems within the laboratory practicals and through extensive feedback on technical and scientific writing
