Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Mechanical Engineer Ii
My current assignment is the support of NGI payload development as part of the mechanical design team. I was initially brought on to manage development of the mechanical isolation system utilized in each vehicle due to my familiarity of the hardware supplier through previous projects, but additionally took on the task of managing the full forward assemblies of each vehicle. This project has allowed me to develop a familiarity with early supplier engagement processes (SSOW generation, MICD development, requirements specification development, etc.), mature my ability to collaborate across multiple teams including electronics, optics, and mechanical design to drive alignment in the design, as well as acquire a better understanding of isolation system design and performance. As an early development program, NGI requires the ability to quickly adapt to ever changing requirements and design spaces, often running quick turn trade studies to assess viability of various architecture designs for incorporation. I have also supported multiple other projects such as Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS), where I lead a small team to assist with the development of a manufacturable TDP for the vehicle. I was responsible for providing engineering input with respect to dimensioning and tolerancing, overall drawing package structure, assigning team member tasking, and minor design of test assets.
Mechanical Engineer I
During this time, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of programs from IRAD and early development to production. Getting exposure to this wide range of projects has allowed me to learn and develop the various skills required for each. The most time that I’ve spent on any one program was supporting Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA through LRIP and early contracts, which included multiple high visibility flight test rounds. My tasking on this program included working closely with the operations team in our Huntsville manufacturing facility to identify and correct inefficiencies in final stages of system assembly and test, assessment of questionable or non-conforming hardware for Material Review Boards, and managing multiple flight test rounds, some of which were overlapping and being assembled in parallel. These tasks required a broad engineering knowledge to assess process or material viability for use in the manufacturing process, clear communication of issues/changes with unquestionable technical justification to numerous program review boards, proficient ability to multi-task and manage schedule, and ability to develop quick engineering solutions to challenges encountered during builds to minimize schedule slip and impact to program milestones. Additionally, I supported and helped manage the design verification testing (DVT) of hardware on SM-3 Block IB as part of a design spin to mitigate risk of hardware failure during mission. While supporting this project, I developed test plans, coordinated with manufacturing facilities to fabricate test assets as well as test facilities, and assisted with post testing data review and design down-selection.
Intern
While at Raytheon Missile Systems, I was responsible for updating technical drawings for the TOW program in preparation for upcoming contracts, and ensuring that they included proper Export/Import markings. I was also tasked with minor modeling of parts using the PTC Creo modeling software. I spent time working supply chain for the Coyote Program, finding Mil-Spec equivalent parts and approved vendors. I also took necessary steps to receive a Secret Clearance while employed at Raytheon.
Undergraduate Research
I briefly participated in research in the field of Aerospace Engineering. The project was aimed at optimizing wing structures to further reduce and distribute loads created during flight. The research involved many aspects from design and analysis, to modeling and simulation.
Installation
Assisted with the installation of various circuits including fire alarm and PA system in accordance with strict standards and regulations. Also aided in troubleshooting many existing circuits for issues such as continuity and ground faults.
