About Shane Mitchell

I am an experienced senior Health, Safety and Training professional with opencut, underground, operational and project experience, having a strong track record in developing working relationships, built on trust and transparency, that has enabled me to influence continuous improvement in safety. My time in Kazakhstan and Mongolia has improved my cultural awareness and relationship building skills. I am comfortable working with all department members on multiple sites to build their awareness capability, allowing them to recognise, control and manage critical risks. I built their investigation skills to support learning through a structured process of fact gathering and analysis using timeline and ICAM methodology to determine the “contributing factors.” This created a change from the cultural focus of blame and punishment, to one of learning. Whilst in Kazakhstan, I was directly involved in two concurrent major projects, while working with and mentoring Operational personnel. In this I was successful in working with teams from multiple sites to develop and deliver, efficient and effective safety procedures and training materials, in a timely fashion to the appropriate international standards. During this time, I was constantly mentoring these teams to build their expertise and confidence. By developing trust and a sense of ownership, I managed a National team of 44 personnel, training a workforce of 1800, ensuring the timely delivery of the management plan. My nationally accredited competencies and licences which include the statutory positions of Surface Ventilation Officer (Health and Hygiene management) and Surface Ventilation Technician (Health and Hygiene), along with Diploma of Work Health and Safety and TAE 40110 Certificate IV Training & Assessment and ICAM, combined with my extensive work experience, allows me to engage with frontline personnel with empathy and understanding when exploring critical hazards associated with High-Risk work.I have an extensive knowledge of the Australian Work Health and Safety Act 2020, the Work Health and Safety (Mining) Regulations 2022, the Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022, and Aus./NZ standards and offer experience with behavioural based safety initiatives, leadership coaching and in the field critical control identification and verification”

Listed skills include Training, Occupational Health, Risk Assessment, Workplace Safety, and 17 others.

Major Achievements.• Update Saracen Minerals Safety Standards on Energy Isolation and Permit to Work and create a Standard for Hot Works.• By building solid working relationships with my peers and frontline personnel, I was able to develop/ update training programs for High-Risk work. During the 3 months I was contracted to Saracen I completed Site and General Inductions, Energy Isolation, Hot Work, Job Safety Analysis and Permit to Work. • Develop a strategy for “Competency Based Training and Assessment”. This is necessary to legislatively prove what process you have used and followed to ensure Verification of Competency (VOC). • All changes to either training programs or Safety Standards were achieved through consultation with frontline personnel, supervisors and finally the Safety Manager. Involving frontline personnel in the consultation process gave them “ownership” where they had never had it before. • Mentor and train the Safety Advisors and the site trainer to create a professional group to promote all new material and processes to the separate work groups. The safety advisors, because of their other duties had little experience when it came to the training materials and methodology, while the trainer was new to the position (internal promotion without the full qualification). This individual training and mentoring were a continual work in progress.• Contact and visit RTO’s to determine the capabilities of the RTO trainer and also the company. This meant watching delivery of the material and then when satisfied completing a training budget to bring said training companies to site to deliver initial High-Risk training and national certification in an efficient and timely manner to ensure the VOC program can continue without hold ups. At times the total assets under construction were close to $300 million with staff levels up to 350 and total infrastructure assets of $50 million. Workplace Health & Safety,Security and Fire management were not only vitally important to the Directors of the company but also to the clients. Fully documented policies and procedures and proof of their correct implementation were essential for the company to secure work with astute investors. My background in Workplace Health & Safety (WHSO, Certificate IV OH&S, Diploma OH&S, current) Certificate IV Workplace Training & Assessment and a Fire Safety Advisor in Queensland and in New South Wales demonstrates my knowledge and understanding of legislation and Australian Standards. Only with a complete understanding of the legislative requirements and the Australian standards are you able to develop policies and procedures to industry best practices. My previous employment involved collaborating with the on-site management of recently acquired companies to develop and implement short, medium and long term Strategic Plans. Deficiencies and inaccuracies in Policies and Procedures were identified and where necessary updated or amended. Consultation with management and staff was essential for the implimentation of the new direction for the company. Informing existing staff of new Policies and Procedures was imperative, allowing them to relay information to the rest of the company. Show less
