About Shane Witters Hicks

When I was a kid, I was fascinated by physics and all-things-food. In high school and college, I was completing volunteer service – building a greenhouse in Peru as well as serving my own community through inspiring organizations. While traveling through India and Nepal, I learned that achieving environmental sustainability may be the most important, and toughest, challenge of my generation. These are diverse interests, and I've enjoyed watching how they've shaped my professional pathway.Following several months as a working professional in technical industry, I realized I couldn't ignore the culinary industry -- which had been tugging at my heart for several years -- any longer. Hence my deep dive into a variety of culinary roles. The last 6 years have been filled with rapid growth, learning at a steep curve, and highly enjoyable exploration of all-things-culinary. Select experiences include: - demanding roles as a cook at diverse and fast-paced restaurants, including elegant bistros and fine-dining;- workshops and certification in plant-based cooking and teaching; - recipe demonstrations and cooking classes for passionate clientele;- cooking as a private chef for a variety of clients, including professional athletes;- contributing to a leading plant-based meat company as Culinary Specialist and Food Stylist;- merging my technical talents with my culinary passion as Culinary Quality Specialist on a quality assurance teamMy aim is to pinpoint the most logical areas of the industry where sustainability, compassion, and health can take center stage and invigorate the global food scene with practical solutions. Above all, I want to cook & serve people soul-warming food that comforts and nourishes!

Listed skills include Leadership, Research, Public Speaking, Microsoft Office, and 10 others.

Intern

Golden, Co

Conducted undergraduate research as part of the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program.Contributed to visual tool development through collaboration with the Computational Science Center’s Data Visualization Group. I worked to turn scientists’ raw data into meaningful, 3D visuals of wind turbine wake simulated by models and measured by an airflow-measurement technology called LiDAR. In order to help researchers better understand the role that LiDAR technology can play in optimizing wind farm structure, I developed an analysis tool that gives a visual comparison of simulated wind turbine wake with LiDAR measurements. With the capability to visualize the precision of the LiDAR wake measurement in the context of the high-resolution wind flow, researchers can better understand the role LiDAR technology might play in wind farm optimization. Skills used include:• operation of and scripting with visualization software including ParaView and Vapor;• C++, python, and bash programming for manipulation of data and visualization;• use of custom visualization codes, models, and an in-house supercomputer to process data and develop visuals; • collaboration with senior-level scientists to determine the most meaningful data aspects to highlight in visuals produced;• formation and investigation of research questions through visual analysis;• clear communication of scientific process and results through writing and poster presentation
