Phd Researcher
Facilitated modelling for managing multiple stressors impacting water resources – towards a policy decision support tool for mixed land-use catchments
Co-Founder
Project Coordinator
At the William D. Ruckelshaus Center I assisted in various stages of a collaborative governance process that aimed to improve the simplicity, consistency, equity and financial sustainability of recreational access throughout Washington State. Participants in the process represented a diversity of state agencies, private companies, tribal governments and outdoor recreation communities. Final recommendations that developed in this process were reported to the Washington State Legislature. These ideas were incorporated into to new legislation that will be voted on in 2018.
Research Consultant
This work was motivated by water quality and quantity issues which resulted in, among other challenges, severe and detrimental impacts on biodiversity within Kruger National Park (KNP). I was lead modeler for the development of a refined and simplified version of a system dynamics model for the Selati Catchment sub-catchment of the Olifants River, which flows through Kruger National Park. In addition to the system dynamics model, our team developed a visual user interface that can be used to communicate lessons from the model to stakeholders with varied levels of technical knowledge. This modeling effort is supported by a parallel stakeholder engagement process that investigates the source of institutional dysfunction by exposing "rules in use" rather than the "rules in form" that dictate the management actions of stakeholders in the catchment. Individual stakeholder engagements were held in dispersed locations around the Limpopo province. The different challenges and points-of-view shared by individuals was integrated into the simulation model which was then used to facilitate group discussions between high-conflict stakeholder groups (i.e. mining, conservation, industry and waste water treatment works) The larger multi-stakeholder workshop was held at the end of 2016. Several publications followed. The program received positive reviews in 2016, which subsequently led to the refining and scaling up of this process, which was applied with the Catchment Management Agency for the Olifants River in 2017.
Honorary Visiting Researcher
System dynamics modeling to investigate the relationships among housing, environment and well-being. This work builds on qualitative SD work, that demonstrated implementation of policies aiming to reduce carbon emissions (such as energy efficiency measures encouraged by the 2008 Climate Change Act) are likely to have unintended consequences. Participatory workshops are planned with diverse stakeholders from national & local government, community members, industry and NGOs. An interactive simulation tool will be used. The objective is to improve stakeholders' holistic and long term perspective in order to reduce fragmentation regarding investments in housing development so that policy goals can be met.
Graduate Research Assistant
• Contributed to a grant proposal receiving funding for the empirical research.• Engaged with stakeholders to investigate sustainable tourism development pathways.• Incorporated findings into a dynamic computer model simulating environmental impacts and management challenges.• Drafted a report of initial findings and established foundation for continued collaboration.
Modeling & Simulation, Renewable Energy And Environment
I used model based analysis and policy design (system dynamics) to explore challenges relating to renewable energy. My projects involved 1) exploring dynamics of the global critical materials supply chain for renewable energy applications and 2) evaluating supply risk and implications for the financial stability of second generation biorefineries.
Teaching Assistant
I teach groups of students to understand and appreciate the natural resources they depend on. A variety of topics are covered during the semester that explore the carbon, nitrogen and water cycles.
