As the Maintenance Engineer for the West Waikato Network Outcomes Contract (NOC), I am responsible for the day-to-day delivery of all cyclic and heavy maintenance activities across 653km of State Highway in the West Waikato region. I support the contract team by preparing and implementing work methodologies; ITPs and related QA documentation; permits; monitoring HSEQS and ensuring compliance; monitoring production; and converting contract documents into simple work instructions that are easily understood by the work crews. I hold a key role in the planning, subsequent execution and reporting of the heavy maintenance programmes and variation to service (VSF) work packages. The successful delivery of the maintenance programmes and VSF work packages requires skillful coordination and liason with our client, design consultants, suppliers, subcontractors, local residents and businesses, and efficient resource allocation of contractor crews. I am also responsible for closing out non-compliances from operational performance measures (OPM) audits, pricing VSFs and assisting with emergencies and/or incidents on the State Highway network.

Upon the completion of my undergraduate studies, I commenced a full-time role as a Graduate Engineer at Fulton Hogan Waikato. In this role, I took every opportunity to observe, learn and hone new skills from experienced teams both in the field and in the office. I developed a strong foundational understanding of various work methodologies across eight departments including, civil construction, maintenance and asset management, chip sealing, asphalt paving, asphalt production, laboratory testing, pavement stabilising and quarrying. In addition to gaining considerable practical work experience and industry knowledge, I successfully developed and maintained a strong professional network both within Fulton Hogan and with external organizations.

I worked alongside a professional and dedicated team of engineers, project managers and construction crews. My role as a civil engineering intern involved quality assurance, obtaining permits, developing Job Safety and Environmental Analysis (JSEAs), organising job packs and developing construction staging plans. I was also given a unique opportunity to manage and supervise construction works for a small ducting project under the guidance of experienced engineers. I worked closely with our suppliers, subcontractors, construction crews and the client; planned and addressed work programmes at the daily tailgate meetings; took asbuilts, promoted health and safety and monitored the impact of construction on the environment.

This position helped me to learn and develop critical skills in the construction industry. With over 400 hours of site experience within two months, my first exposure to the construction industry consisted of countless learning opportunities from highly-skilled and experienced tradespeople. I had the opportunity to work at 13 different commercial and residential sites across Auckland, giving me a relatively broad range of on-site experience. Tasks within this role included; concrete mixing and breaking, interior demolition, excavation works, manual handling of construction materials and site clean up/load out.

I had the opportunity to handle customer inquiries to a high standard and to provide exceptional customer service.
