My name is Shane, and my pronouns are she/her.I am a technology executive with decades of experience delivering strategic innovation. I am a contributing author at Lawfare Institute, a Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Cyber Statecraft Initiative, Distinguished Advisor to the Rust Foundation, and an Advisory Board member for the State of Open Conference. Previously, I was founding chair of the Rust Foundation and founding leader of four different organizations at Amazon Web Services (AWS), including Rust open source.I have successful experience defining business and technical strategies, founding organizations, hiring executive and engineering teams, developing technical product roadmaps, building and maintaining strategic partnerships, and acting as a spokesperson for organizations and technologies.Through a series of experiments recovering failing projects, products, and organizations, I’ve developed mechanisms for creating large and diverse effective teams. Launching a great product or business requires contributions from public relations, legal, sales, and finance, in addition to software development roles like engineering, product, and security. I believe the biggest innovation we can make in technology is growing the number of people that can work together successfully. Across insurance, infrastructure, eCommerce, machine learning, cryptography, program language design, and open source, my experience has been that the reason leaders fail to scale effectively and the processes for success are consistent.An effective team requires a common culture (language and ceremonies), a common goal, and mutual engagement, but the human limit on the number of people we can have high fidelity mutual engagement with limits the size of our teams. We can break those organizational limits by building technology nations. In a nation, the need for individual mutual engagement is replaced with common tenets and principles, shared ceremonies for goal negotiations, peer audits, and calibration that keep language and direction consistent across the organization, and equitable access to valuable resources like autonomy, high visibility work, and discretionary budget.
