Analytical engineer suffers from a hopeless addiction to philosophy, creativity, and technology.I have spent the last 20 years dodging the direct application of my Mechanical Engineering degree. Don’t get me wrong; I love a spreadsheet as much as the next engineer, but I have always been in search of something more. Let’s call it meaning.For me, there is endless fascination at the intersection of what compels us as humans, what we choose to create together, and the tools we employ in this process.I want to understand, and I want a useful model that will help us all to experience shared understanding. My first love in this pursuit would have to be film; which always hits me at the intersection of story, expression, and craft. This is where I spent the first decade of my career translating technical engineering concepts into communicative visualization projects.But I still love technology. I grew up with the internet after falling in love with open source web projects in the early 2000s. Like any good evangelist of new technology, I launched my own Meetup group for open source content management systems in the Detroit area and quickly met hundreds of fellow enthusiasts. This was community, this was the web, and it still lives with me as an impassioned ethos of the desire for all of us to connect, share, and build what's next together.My career path and personal intellectual development have evolved together. Understanding how stories work brought me to the fascination of the Hero’s Journey and the work of Joseph Campbell. Understanding what motivates and compels people brought me to the philosophical and psychological work of Carl Jung and Claire Graves. Understanding how Agile web development works brought me to David Snowden and the Cynefin framework.All along the way; the challenge that motivates me is that of putting understanding into practice, how do we apply our best models to the unending problems of work, business, art, communication, and meaningful growth.This is the strategic and skillful application of technology for the joy and flourishing of life.I have created, taught, developed, marketed, sold, and built communities around this pursuit and I can’t wait to discover where it goes next.
