In this role I led a number of collaborative, multidisciplinary research projects, published peer-reviewed publications, presented at international conferences, managed and maintained the laboratory and mentored postgraduate and undergraduate students. As part of this role, I was a collaborating member and shipboard Scientist on GATEWAYS 2 campaign aboard the R.V. Celtic Explorer. This was a multi-national, multi-disciplinary campaign with the primary objective of mapping and investigating the extent of the British-Irish Ice Sheet, with an additional objective of physical and biogeochemical investigation of shallow gas accumulation in Bantry Bay. I was also involved in an international interdisciplinary field sampling campaign to the Po Valley in the Cottian Alps.

Biogeochemistry of Irish coastal marine seabed environmentsTeam member and lead on a number of marine research surveys:- In June 2010 I planned and led the INFOMAR-funded marine survey CV10_28 to the Irish Sea (RV Celtic Voyager, 7 days).- In May 2011, I was a shipboard scientist on INFOMAR-funded marine survey CE11_017 to the Porcupine Bank (RV Celtic Explorer, 13 days).- In May 2012, I was a shipboard scientist on the EU­‐funded (EUROFLEETS) AmSedIS survey (CV12_07) to the Irish Sea (RV Celtic Voyager, 6 days).

Six months paid research lab placement as part of INTRA work placement program in DCU. I played an active role in the research and lab management carried at the School of Chemical Sciences. Skills attained included project planning and management, report writing and presentation, environmental field sampling, chemical analysis (inorganic and organic), and analytical instrumentation (GC-MS, HPLC).

As part of Biomedical Diagnostics Institute (BDI) UREKA program I was one of two Irish students chosen for an international research exchange with the Nanobiotechnology Centre (NBTC) in Cornell University, New York. The placement was in Prof. W.L. Kraus’ Lab, and was in the area of molecular biology and cancer biology research.
