Shanize Byrd Email and Phone Number
Since I was a young girl, I had a passion for learning and sharing stories about my Black culture. I remember when I was eight years old and I learned about two Black historical figures, Maya Angelou and Thurgood Marshall. I desired for the world to know my poetry like Maya and to change the political landscape for Black people like Thurgood. That has been my path ever since I became conscious of what it means to be a freedom fighter for Black folks. I studied psychology and public relations at my beloved alma mater, Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL. After graduation, I joined the Teach For America corps and taught for three years in the New Orleans Public School System. I taught middle-school ELA and social studies, with an emphasis on Black culture and history. Those years in the classroom were transformative for me because I was humbled as a leader and learned what it really meant to be a freedom fighter for Black people (through my beautiful and brilliant students).I left the classroom to become a professional organizer and began working with an Industrial Areas Foundation affiliate, Together Baton Rouge, in Baton Rouge, LA. The most significant campaign that I worked on was a campaign that went up against major corporations, like ExxonMobil, demanding them to pay their fair share in property taxes and cease taking vital funds from local entities. I then transitioned to become an organizational specialist with the largest labor union in the country, National Education Association. My time in the classroom, with Together Baton Rouge and with the National Education Association helped informed me about my mission. Those experiences gave me the necessary tools to sharpen my skills and develop my own space, blackbyrd initiative. blackbyrd initiative is a self improvement and leadership develop organization that provides healing-centered programming and initiatives to equip Black women with necessary tool to dismantle White Supremacy culture and actualize liberation in their personal and professional lives.
