Since 1991 I have been working as an applied physicist in machine operations (at least half that time as a supervisor) participating in cutting edge scientific experiments in plasma physics, particle physics, nuclear physics, accelerator physics, astrophysics, and astronomy. Operations is a 24/7 job, focused on the performance of computer controlled scientific machines, and the production of quality scientific data. This requires a broad range of knowledge in technical applications, system integration, digital controls, safety, and the ability to multitask and pay meticulous attention to minute details. Operating, tuning, and trouble shooting these unique machines is done by shift crews working with scientists, engineers, and technicians, so it is very team oriented, and leadership plays a key role in the day to day performance of the experimental facilities. Likewise, excellent verbal and written communication skills are required to coordinate the efforts of the shift crews, experimenters, and system experts, as well as for documentation, record keeping, and training purposes. My personal expertise is in developing beam tuning methods and software applications to simplify the tasks of operations and improve the productivity of machines, personnel, and experiments. I have been directly involved in testing, commissioning, operation, and controls development at Tri Alpha Energy Technologies (TAE), the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL), MIT Bates Linear Accelerator Center, the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF), and the National Radio Astronomy Observatories (NRAO), Very Large Array (VLA). My successful approach to machine operations is to use past experience and technical insight to proactively address failure modes and solve problems before they actually occur.

Lead OperatorTri Alpha Energy Sep 2016 - PresentSouthern CaliforniaTAE Technologies is leveraging proprietary science and engineering to tackle the world’s biggest challenges. Our core mission is to create a new source of clean energy – one that’s powered by nature’s own processes and produces no harmful byproducts. It’s what we call Friendly Fusion. Our groundbreaking work has effected industry-wide advances in accelerator and plasma physics, and acted as a catalyst for adjacent innovations based on our results. With 20 years of focused research, TAE Technologies is on a purposeful path to commercial fusion energy and pioneering sustainable solutions for a better tomorrow. -

Engineering Physicist Ii/Iii - Accelerator Operations Beam Transport SupervisorMichigan State University Jul 2005 - Jun 2016National Superconducting Cyclotron Lab & Facility For Rare Isotope BeamsEngineering Physicist III – Accelerator Operations Beam Transport SupervisorManaged Operations Groups running a superconducting linac ReAccelerator (ReA), and coupled superconducting cyclotrons (CCF), to deliver stable and radioactive ion beams (RIBs) used to perform Nuclear Physics experiments. This includes beam development, testing, commissioning new experiments and equipment as well as production beam delivery. In the past year I was instrumental in the success of the first stopped and reaccelerated RIB experiments with ReA, using the CCF as an active radioactive ion production source. The success of these experiments brings in $5 million of funding per year from the National Science Foundation for ReA operations.Engineering Physicist II – Accelerator Operator & Commissioning OperatorWorked in the ReA3 ReAccelerator Commissioning and Coupled Cyclotron Facility (CCF) Operations Groups testing, tuning, running, optimizing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and developing high level controls software for a system of two, coupled superconducting cyclotrons and an SRF Linac used to accelerate heavy ion beams. Performed additional duties in the areas of accelerator physics and integrated systems engineering. As a result, the time required for an ion beam change in the CCF has gone from 16 hours to 2 hours. Directly involved in every ReA commissioning bench mark, and preliminary system testing for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). Devised and documented system specifications, tuning methods, and other operating procedures for ReA and the CCF. Designed and developed the ReA Operations Control Software (ROCS) which is the primary high level control system interface for ReA and the CCF. In addition, I wrote the ROCS User Guide which is over 100 pages and is used as training and reference material for Accelerator Operations and accelerator support staff. -
Accelerator Operations Group LeaderMit Apr 2001 - Jul 2005Managed a Deputy Group Leader, four Chief Operators and five Union Operators who ran the electron beam accelerator. Besides hiring, training, and scheduling employees, was responsible for all aspects of beam delivery including the ability to perform all the functions of the Accelerator Operators and Chief Operators. On call 24/7 to address facility problems and work with all the laboratory personnel to maintain optimal machine performance and scientific data quality and quantity. This continual effort involved developing new methods of beam delivery, devising experiments to test and improve the machine performance, coordinating maintenance and machine upgrades, as well as creating safety procedures to insure that OSHA and DOE industrial safety practices were implemented and followed correctly. Developed, specified and prioritized hardware and software modifications as part of the transition from analog electronic controls to EPICS based digital controls. Automated control and status monitoring of the magneto optical system used to transport the electron beam, and designed the software which automatically filled the storage ring over 45,000 times in a three year period. This software made MIT Bates one of the only major accelerators in the world with fully automated production beam delivery. As a result, Bates final experiment, BLAST, received 300% of the minimum beam requirement. -
Accelerator Crew ChiefThomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Oct 1998 - Apr 2001This directly involved the commissioning and operation of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator, and the Free Electron Laser, research facilities. As Crew Chief and machine expert, was responsible for directing a team of 2 or 3 operators to achieve the laboratory's physics research goals in a safe and efficient manner. Continued to develop control system software, operating procedures, and train new Accelerator Operators.

Accelerator Operator I & IiThomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Aug 1995 - Oct 1998These positions consisted of machine operations and software development for electron beam accelerators. Duties include tuning the beams, diagnosing faults and coordinating repairs of complex integrated hardware and software systems, and emergency response. Defined, documented, and wrote operations software for the EPICS control system, including real-time beam status monitoring, magnet control, and web based logging systems for maintenance and down time tracking, along with UNIX system management on HP workstations.Accelerator Div.
