The American Lung Association continues to make excellent strides in pursuit of our Mission which is to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. The facts: 390,000 Americans die of lung disease every year; seven million children suffer from asthma in the U.S.; 33 million Americans live with chronic lung disease; and every two-and-a-half minutes someone is diagnosed with lung cancer, half of which die within a year. Lung cancer continues to take the most lives associated with any form of cancer!We made remarkable advances in the Four Focus Areas of our Strategic Plan – Tobacco Control, Clean Air, Reducing the Burden of Lung Disease, and Building Our Capacity.This year, due to the generosity of our donors and grant funders, the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest doubled our research commitment to fight lung cancer. Overall, we are proud to report that we committed $3 million to support novel and innovative lung disease research. Our achievements are a result of local community volunteer and leadership boards.Our donors and participants climb to the top of the tallest buildings in our Fight for Air Climbs, and they generously give in many ways to ensure resources are available to enable us to continue to improve lung health. Springfield will lead the Fight for Air Climbs as the most money raised per capita in 2015-2016.

While working at the March of Dimes, I was privileged to work alongside families affected by premature births and birth defects. As a mother of three “preemies,” I had a personal connection to the families and knew firsthand just how difficult there fight was. The March of Dimes helps moms have healthy pregnancies and raises funds that help fight premature births and birth defects. During my seven fulfilling years at the March of Dimes I had the great honor of accomplishing the following:Developed over 40 marketing pieces used throughout the state.Created mission presence throughout Central Illinois.Increased media coverage by all local Networks and news publications across the Central Division. Lead and motivated staff and volunteers.Acted as liaison between the March of Dimes, volunteers and local communities. Recruited, trained and managed high-level volunteers along with corporate partners and sponsors. Identified opportunities with donors and employers to generate revenue, health initiative goals, volunteers, program sponsorship and advocacy contracts.Assisted in ongoing sales and project management to further generate mission delivery, mission support, and volunteer recruitment opportunities.Coordinated and implemented cost-effective fundraising and mission-driven programs.Increased collaboration and support with state-wide communications and programming and governmental affairs. Identified, secured and worked alongside Division Board to achieve financial goals. Developed and implemented events to recognize, reward, and motivate successful volunteers to ensure ongoing support.
