Profile bio

About Shannon Wright, Phd

I am a scientist interested in developing treatments of genetic disorders. As a postdoctoral associate in Dr. Li-Huei Tsai's lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I use gene editing techniques to generate isogenic iPSC lines modeling Alzheimer's disease risk variants, and evaluate their phenotypic effects in neural cell types. Using these models, I investigate the cell-autonomous and non-autonomous genetic defects that drive neural dysfunction to develop a comprehensive mechanistic understanding leading to intervention.During my PhD training at the University of Michigan with Dr. Peter Todd, I used stem cell-derived neurons and rodent primary cultures to study repeat expansion disorders, including Fragile X-associated disorders. I studied protein synthesis and translational mechanisms, and their impact on neuronal health and physiology. While there, I lead the development of a stem cell facility in the lab, which involved deriving and characterizing new patient cell lines, establishing differentiation protocols, and developing phenotypic assays that could be used to evaluate potential drug interventions.Through these works, I have acquired an extensive genome editing, cell culture, and molecular biology toolkit, which I continue to expand and apply to the discovery of therapeutic targets for neurological and genetic disorders.
