About Shannon Scott

While my main focus is ensuring that my organization is financially viable and sustainable, my success is reliant on five critical ideas:1. Culture starts with me. If I don’t model behaviors, reward quirky thinking, practice open, honest and direct communication, lift up both successes and failures, allow others to make decisions and advocate and publicly promote my team, the team will not be a cohesive, successful unit.2. Don’t take myself too seriously. Really, it’s just work. I’m serious and focused when I need to be, but when it’s not required, I make sure that work is a fun place to be.3. People matter. I can’t do anything without my team and all other staff buying into the success of the organization. Finance and accounting are disciplines that require people to play by the rules – not much gets made up as we go. So rather than forcing the rules onto people, I recognize how critical it is to include users in the process so there is a shared understanding of why changes are made and how these changes can simplify their work lives.4. Simplify their work lives. Operations teams are almost always seen as the “bad guys” with too many forms, not enough flexibility and a lack of understanding about the real business of the organization. So, if I’m convinced change must happen, I make sure the result is a simplified process that still meets the best practices standards set by the organization.5. Understand the real business of the organization. No one will take me seriously if I can’t talk about the work my organization does. That learning happens in daily one-on-one conversations with people – not scheduled meetings, but casual conversations had when walking around the office and talking to people. Again, while this is work, spending unscheduled, relaxed time with people helps others to see you and your work in a different way.

There is a comfort in the weight and familiarity of a camera in my hands. Its technology doesn’t scare me, but challenges me to think differently about how I see life. Photography is an art that is very subjective–what is beautiful to some is outlandish to others. What I try to capture is the spirit and essence of who you are by learning about you before the shoot, understanding why you want photos taken and taking photos in a setting that is comfortable and relaxing. In the end, what makes a great photo is my ability to discern who you are and what you want so that when you see the final result, you can say, “Yep, you caught it just right.”
