Profile bio

About Shannon Kopp, Mfa

🐾 In 2016, I founded SoulPaws Recovery Project, an accredited nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and adults with eating disorders, which have the second highest mortality rate of all mental health conditions. SoulPaw unleashes the therapeutic power of the human-animal bond, blending neuroscience with animal-assisted interventions. (www.soulpawsrecovery.org)📖 In 2014, Pound for Pound: A Story of One Woman’s Recovery and the Shelter Dogs Who Loved Her Back to Life, was published by HarperCollins Publishers. Now, as a proud member of the HarperCollins Speakers Bureau, I speak regularly about mental health, eating disorders and the power of the human-animal connection. I’m represented by Creative Arts Agency. (www.caa.com)📣 As a National Mental Health Advocate for ERC Pathlight, I lead content creation, spearhead advocacy initiatives from the ground up, develop strong referral partners and trusted connections, and help to grow the organization’s presence in the collegiate space. Two programs I’m especially proud of developing are Say It Brave and Say It Brave on Campus, which have brought free mental health awareness resources and events to thousands. ❤️ I hold an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from Pacific University, and have written for CNN, Maria Shriver Media, The Huffington Post, Good Housekeeping, and more. My story has been featured in PEOPLE, NPR, CNN Turning Points with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Women’s Health, and Psychology Today.“Every now and again a book comes along that can help millions of people deal with all sorts of difficult and challenging times and guide them to change their ways for a better and healthier life. Pound for Pound is one of those inspirational gems. Shannon Kopp's personal story—the incredibly hard work she had to do and her opening her heart to the dogs with whom she worked—is a must read. She shows how compassion, trust, and love can open the door for people and dogs in need to heal and to grow together.”— Marc Bekoff, author of Rewilding our Hearts: Building Pathways of Compassion and Coexistence, Cofounder of Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, with Jane Goodall“Pound for Pound is an emotional reminder of the strength of the human spirit and how dogs are more than our best friend; they can also be guides, inspiring us to be compassionate, share joy, and live in the moment.”— Booklist
