Vice President
I spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica where we worked in 3 different communities and provided health care to 333 people that have basically never received health care before or wouldn’t have received it otherwise. We worked along side a physician to diagnosis the patient based on their symptoms and vitals. We were allowed to do hands on work on the patients and basically act and see what it was like to be a doctor for two weeks because it is outside of the US and the regulations are less strict. We had suture and injection classes. The trip solidified my love and passion for medicine and I continue to appreciate the dedication of the people in the medical field. My favorite part was being able to work as a physician since I won’t be able to again until I’m out of residency and find a job. The connections I made with the patients in Costa Rica is amazing as the people were so generous and so so sweet even though they have nothing. One family lived in a 10x10 box with only two mattresses no sink no kitchen and no bathroom but they were some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I am so appreciative for the opportunity and it was absolutely the best experience of my life.
Recruiter And Founding Class Member
Water Analysis Project Manager
The Water Analysis team is looking to design and create a cheap and effective water testing system with the ability to transmit and store its data. This is to ensure that the water that is provided to the citizens of Cange, Haiti as well as other similar areas meet the potable water standards set by the World Health Organization to aide in the elimination of waterborne illnesses such as cholera, E. coli, and typhoid fever. Our current way of acquiring data from the water system in Cange is through a local water technician that tests all of the water from the multiple fountains each day by hand. In order for CEDC to respond to problems more quickly, the water must be continuously monitored. To solve this problem, the team has designed and built a prototype which utilizes a TDS sensor to measure the total dissolved solids, a turbidity sensor which indicates the clarity of the water, a pH sensor to test the neutrality of the water, and sensor to measure the level of free chlorine dissolved in the water. The inexpensive sensors will be connected to an Arduino system that will wirelessly communicate to a larger hub where the data can be uploaded online. This semester, the team has investigated alternative types of Arduino compatible sensors that can measure the desired data while maintaining low project costs in order to improve upon the existing prototype. We have also looked into methods of data transfer and different network organization strategies for the group of testing units. The team would like to give special thanks to Dr. Ladner of the Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences Department and Bob Mussro, an industry professional.
