About Shannon M.H. Smith
I recently had the unfortunate experience of witnessing a car accident while heading to work. A four door sedan clipped the front bumper of a semi-truck travelling directly in front of me. This caused the car to move perpendicular to the highway before proceeding, at full speed, straight up an embankment supporting an exit ramp. The car then rolled over two times landing off to the side of the road. Being the perpetual Boy Scout, I pulled over and rushed to the driver’s side of the car. There I found tireless wheel hubs, dented doors, smashed windows, and the luckiest young man in the world that day. He was covered in broken, safety glass and miscellaneous pocket change that he probably had stored in his console, but, besides from being emotionally rattled from the accident, he seemed in perfect health. I called the authorities and, worried about the potential for shock, stood near this young man as we waited for the sirens and lights to arrive. He proceeded to call his mother telling her in tears about the accident. As I assured him that he would be OK, I noticed a shiny quarter on the ground that must have fallen out as his car rolled into its stopping place. I felt so conflicted about whether or not I should pick up this young man’s quarter and give it to him. Would he be grateful, or would my good intention be the straw that broke him that day? The sirens and lights finally came. I gave my statement to the officers, and then they released me from the scene. As I pulled back onto the highway, making my way to work once again, the image of that shiny quarter and the conflict it created in me raced back into my head. After a minute or so of reflecting on that quarter, I found myself chuckling over my next thought – only a true Accounts Payable manager could get so distressed over a lost quarter. Apparently I have found my calling.
