I am Shaomei. My work centers on understanding the experiences of marginalized communities and building empowering technologies with them.I spent most of my career so far as a research scientist and software engineer at Facebook/Instagram, driving and leading various "technology for good" initiatives such as AI for accessibility, AI for inclusion, and Equity. Through these initiatives, I designed and built AI-powered technologies to empower and include people from marginalized and under-resourced communities, for example, people with disabilities, people with limited literacy skills, and racial minorities in the US. I designed and shipped automatic alt-text on Facebook that describes images to people with visual impairments. I also worked with people with dyslexia in research of AI-powered writing tools that empower everyone to express themselves more confidently through writing. Before joining Facebook AI, I was part of the Core Data Science team where I built temporal and structural models to study how information and behavior spread in the network. I also conducted quantitative and qualitative research to understand the challenges faced by marginalized communities on and off Facebook.I embrace both qualitative and quantitative research methods. I am an enthusiastic user and researcher of deep learning tools and models.I publish my work in CHI, WWW, CSCW, WSDM. I frequently review papers and serve in the program committee for many of these conferences as well.
