Freelance writing, editing and production for book, periodical and online publishing projects

Supervised all aspects of producing editorial content for Los Angeles County’s largest weekly newspaper. Directly managed editorial assistants, calendar staff, copy chief and researchers; handled personnel matters for the whole department; and worked closely with the other departments, particularly production and finance. Responsible for enforcing deadlines, managing freelance payments, handling the budget and overseeing editorial production. Also edited articles and calendar listings. Worked with IT manager to implement a database for freelance payments; subsequently, worked on a team to develop a proprietary content management system that L.A. Weekly still uses. I also became very familiar with online listings databases: First I worked with a programmer to refine and implement a proprietary database; after our company was purchased, I supervised the process of merging that data into a new system. I also learned how to use two different website content management systems.

Edited a monthly 55,000-circulation newspaper distributed to members of the Sierra Club in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Wrote articles, worked with volunteers, edited all copy and handled all design and production.

Supervised all editorial operations for an award-winning group of three alternative weeklies, six community newspapers and one legal newspaper. Directed a department of 35+ employees and worked on a management team with the other department heads. Directly responsible for managing the editors, the online web listings, the independent contractors, all budgeting and personnel matters, and editorial production. Also edited regular ­columns and the food section. Left the job to relocate to Southern California and be near family.
