Division Of Appeals
•Schedule, coordinate, and conduct expulsion hearings as the designee for the Chief of District Operations•Consult with school and central based administrators regarding student discipline•Investigate and make recommendations to the director (Division of Appeals) related to appeals dealing with student discipline; change of school assignment; complaints from the public; and other superintendent level appeals•Assist the director in consulting, reviewing, and editing appeal reports prepared by a cadre of temporary part-time hearing officers•Assist director with supervision of office staff and managing office workflow•Ongoing consultation with central office staff; primarily Office of the General Counsel, Chief of Teaching, Learning, and Schools, Athletics Unit, Department of Special Education, Department of Transportation, Student Welfare and Compliance Unit, Alternative Education Programs, all MCPS comprehensive schools, and the Board of Education•Communicate with parents and community service providers on a case-by-case basis•Serve as acting director in the director’s absence•Represent Division of Appeals on various workgroups to include Behavior Threat Assessment; Suspension Data Review; and Regulations JEE-RA and KLA-RA rewrite teams•Serve as a witness in Board level due process hearings•With director, presented procedural updates to pupil personnel workers, and participated in principal PLC on the graduation appeal process•Districtwide compliance trainer for the 2018-2021 school years•Developed and implemented Beyond the Discipline training presented at 2019 National Youth-at-Risk Conference and later to MCPS staff•Developed an office operational binder for distribution to other central-based offices as a resource guide
