Profile bio

About Sharline M. Yoon, Ms

A few years ago, I applied for a highly coveted hotel management position and was rejected. NOT ONCE. TWICE.I was devastated.I was an internal candidate and had the required qualifications. To add salt to the wound, the candidate who accepted the job didn’t show up on her first day. Or ever.My employer decided to look for someone with more experience rather than take me, the “runner-up.”This disappointment led me to take a more proactive approach to my career.I believe if an employer is willing to invest time and energy into their employees, then anyone can thrive, regardless of previous experience.I have a can-do attitude, drive, and strong work ethic. I figure that already puts me ahead of other candidates who are only willing to do the bare minimum.I applied for a call center sales position and was hired at the recommendation of a former colleague.I interacted and learned from leaders who provided a supportive environment, shared their tools for success, and gave me honest (sometimes ruthless) feedback.I kept an open mind and learned from the best.I transitioned into a completely different industry with NO prior experience.I maintained an adaptive mindset, and quickly surpassed seasoned veterans. In fact, I ranked the top 8th representative out of 200 sales agents in the company.I produced the highest revenue and yield per call.My performance was recognized. My calls were used as examples of “best practices” in training new associates. My managers asked me to lead weekly team meetings and provide tips to help colleagues improve their sales efforts.Moral of the story:• Reframe life's negative experiences as positive teachable moments.• Believe in yourself even when no one has faith in you.• You never know what you're capable of until you try.• If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.• Find an employer who understands your value and wants you to better yourself.• Consider hiring for potential because you never know what your employees are capable of until they're given the opportunity to try.
