Sharmi Basu has been an artist, strategic planner, and experienced fundraiser for nearly 20 years. They most recently supported grant writing, operational development, and fundraising for the historic St. James Infirmary in San Francisco and are the inaugural Executive Director of Vital Arts. With over a decade of experience in arts administration and the nonprofit sector, they are passionate about creating and curating change and generative growth through strategic planning, emotional skill building, community needs assessment, and team empowerment. Their work across all sectors centers on traversing the dynamic landscapes of people in struggle, mainly queer, trans, and BIPOC, toward collective liberation.Sharmi is a multimedia performance artist, composer, and arts advocate from Oakland, CA, known for creating immersive sound installations, new media controllers, and performance pieces that explore the emotional terrain of marginalized communities. Sharmi earned a double BA in Political Science and Technocultural Studies at the University of California, Davis, and an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College.As the creative force behind Beast Nest, Sharmi transmutes trauma and chronic illness into vast sound portals by weaving complex sonic textures across the frequency spectrum. Their work is characterized by layering across the frequency spectrum to create immersive, encompassing aural experiences. Sharmi's performances have been featured at venues and festivals such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, The Kitchen NY, and the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival.In addition to their artistic pursuits, Sharmi’s sound, liberation, and decolonization workshops have garnered international attention. They are a founder of the Multiverse is Illuminated, the first ever Bay Area Black and Brown Punk Festival, and serve on the board of Bay Area Girls Rock Camp, Safer DIY Spaces, and California FM. They were a '22 fellow at Emerging Arts Professionals, a '23 artist in residence at Audium in San Francisco and VR Art Camp, and continue to be a mediator for QTBIPIC communities and the financial manager of Ratskin Records. Sharmi's tenure in festival and event planning, organizational prowess, and unwavering commitment to their community make them unique in this field.
