Dr. Sharmila Mann serves as a Director of Policy at the Education Commission of the States. In her role, she supports the development of strategic priorities for the Policy Team, supervises and contributes to staff work in policy and research, and fosters internal and external relationships that expand the reach of the Policy Team’s products and expertise. Dr. Mann’s areas of interest and responsibility span a range of P-16 issues, including: college and workforce preparation; alignment of standards, curriculum, assessments, and data systems; postsecondary access and success; state authorization; K-12 teacher quality; and K-12 accountability. She brings more than 15 years of education policy experience to her role, including 10 years at the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association engaging with state and federal policymakers, funders and national associations in pursuit of policy to smooth transitions between education sectors. Sharmila holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Cornell University as well as a master’s and doctorate in human genetics from the University of Michigan. In her free time, she enjoys inventing recipes, hiking in the mountains and reveling with her husband in the antics of their young daughter.
