About Sharon Deveto

I've worked in hospice care as a chaplain for 7 years. It's very difficult. But, I'll never do anything more humbling, affirming, exhausting, more deeply pastoral, in my life. An extraordinary career in teaching for 23 years pales in comparison. And I loved, LOVED, teaching those kids. When I am at the bedside of a dying person, it is as though God graces me with a glimpse of His face for just a fraction of time, and I know it. I know it just like the man who says he 'just knows' when asked how he knew that woman would be his wife 72 years ago. And he still looks at her with failing but adoring eyes. I get to witness that, too. I had a patient who was 103 and I would not have guessed his age past 70. No kidding. I had another patient who was 67 and her face looked like she had weathered a century of suffering and pain. People say to me, 'how can you do that every day?? That's got to be so hard!!' And I want to say back, 'how does a garbage collector do THAT every day?' It's all relative, isn't it? Yes, death is difficult. But, so is life. Dr. M. Scott Peck's iconic book, 'The Road Less Traveled' begins with the very first line, 'Life is difficult.' He then proceeds to explain that once we accept this fact, we can actually transcend it, maybe even embrace it. Life is difficult. And no one, NO ONE, escapes suffering and loss and hardship and pain. It doesn't matter how much money, power, beauty, status, and so forth--EVERYONE suffers. Recognize that pain is a part of life just as much as joy, and life will be that much richer, grander, and meaningful! So, how do I do it?? God, music, and ice cream. And a loving life partner who worships every bit of me. I have waited a very, very long time for that. When the oldest son leaned in closely with words of love for his dying father, right before he took his final breath, this man, my patient, whispered to his son, 'wish me luck.' Everybody is going to die; but nobody actually believes it. Believe it. And live like you do.
