As a speechwriter for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, I wrote speeches for ministers and ambassadors on topics ranging from foreign affairs to trade and investment to climate change.I worked with policymakers to craft media and social media strategies that furthered Australia’s interests domestically and abroad.

I manage the Canberra Cavalry baseball team's social media - including Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok, working directly with players and staff to build a cohesive and engaging story and presence for the team and our players. I'm involved in all aspects of social media and communication, from strategic planning with the Assistant General Manager to capturing on and off-field content to video editing.I've worked to built trust and rapport with team members, meaning I am able to create content that plays on their strengths, and I've encouraged them to step outside their comfort zones to create genuine, authentic and engaging content.As a result, the Cavalry’s social media saw clear growth in followers and engagement, and excellent feedback from the community. One Instagram reel I created broke 1.2 million views – a huge achievement for an account with 6,300 followers. Importantly, this engagement translated into measurable upticks in ticket and merchandise sales.

In my capacity as a Media Liaison Officer at DFAT, I have represented Australia in various fora, and have worked on incoming and outgoing visits. This includes advocating and influencing stakeholders; liaising with Australian and other officials, managing press conferences and events; and liaising and managing media and journalists.

I provided specialist writing expertise and communications support to senior leadership, and assisted in developing the organisation’s strategic research and writing capability.In the strategic writing space, I worked closely with the Principal Consultant to develop the organisation’s research priorities and strategy; develop relationships and rapport between industry and the public sector; and provide strategy and writing expertise to colleagues, including senior leadership.I provided communications expertise to the Professional Services business area, including designing and developing compelling and targeted proposal documents and presentation materials, newsletters and graphics.

I researched and wrote speeches, scripts and op-eds for the Ambassador and other senior diplomats. In doing so, I ensured that I developed and maintained a strategic awareness of the State Department’s objectives; political, economic and world events; and my speakers’ writing and speaking styles.I worked closely with the Ambassador, the Political, Economic and Public Affairs Counsellors, and subject matter experts in the Embassy to shape the Embassy’s strategic communications capability and develop and refine compelling key messages. I worked with a small team and external contractors to design and implement a communications plan to promote support services for those affected by the Disability Royal Commission. I liaised closely with diverse stakeholders in the disability sector and internally to produce a meaningful, accessible and inclusive communications plan and communication materials.

As founder and editor-in-chief of pop culture website Pop Culture-y, I oversaw a team of up to a dozen freelance writers. I assigned work, often with 48-hour or less turnaround times; edited pieces in consultation with writers; and published work. The website found its niche in local film, comedy and theatre, with a small but dedicated regular readership. I attribute this to the culture of collegiality, excellence and accountability I built – through maintaining regular contact through both formal and informal check-ins; setting and modelling expectations and behaviours early and often; and forming genuine working relationships and friendships. Ultimately, I sold the website in 2019.

I prepared proactive and reactive media materials to support the Department’s public image in a fast-paced, contentious, and complex environment. I built and maintained excellent working relationships across the portfolio, liaised with journalists, and developed and refined media messaging. I worked on all aspects of a strategic communications campaign targeting specific audiences in key countries. I developed strategic messaging based on intelligence reporting and worked closely with departmental colleagues, DFAT, Defence, and ADF colleagues, and external stakeholders both in Australia and internationally, to ideate, develop, and execute tactical communication materials for this campaign.Notable achievement: Served as the key departmental liaison for the Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh accounts.

I researched, drafted and edited speeches and other internal and external executive communications for senior executive staff and ministers on a range of topics, including international trade, cybersecurity, and migration. Notable achievement: Communications Branch Award for Excellence, 2017
