Society is enhanced when all people have an opportunity to achieve what is ‘good’. Only once people have the opportunity to determine what is ‘good’ and what is right, do they then have the opportunity, and one might argue the responsibility, to advocate for said ‘good’. The collective work of the human body, the work of all in tandem, is what Rawls (Justice as Fairness, 2003) refers to as our common asset. “What is regarded as a common asset, then, is the distribution of native endowments, that is the differences among persons”(p. 75). This tells us that for better or worse, works based on knowledge of what is ‘good’ and works based on ignorance; they all combine to form the common asset. Therefore, if society is to at least attempt to reach the pinnacle of greatness, if each member of society wants what is ‘good’, at least one definition of what is ‘good’ would require, at least in a democratic society, that to the extent possible, all people are educated.
